- Physical examination - looking for causes of delirium.
- Blood tests - full blood count, thyroid test, Vitamin B12, folate, (looking for a cause that aggravates depression and delirium).
- Blood glucose level ( looking for hypoglycemia )
- Liver function test ( looking for alcoholic liver disease)
- Urine culture - especially in elderly looking for Urinary tract infection that can cause delirium.
- Urine drug screen - consider if suspect illicit drug abuse.
- CT and or MRI Brain - if suspect Alzheimer's disease.
